Happy Members at CrossFit Renaissance

Mary Ellen Stevens

“Bill and I have a mutual friend, Matt Duffy. One day I looked at Matt and he just looked younger. He had lost weight before, but this was different. I asked him what he was doing and he told me about how Bill had started his own gym. A few weeks later, I saw Bill and we chatted about CrossFit. I was seven months pregnant with Daniel and excited to find a way to lose the baby weight. I told my husband about this CrossFit stuff. He had lifted weights in high school and college so he too was interested. I figured I’d give it a solid six weeks and then I’d phase it out. That was a little over 5 years ago.
My first impression was that I sucked at it. I left my fundamentals class crying because I couldn’t execute a Snatch. Fast elbows…? Nope. I couldn’t even run 400 meters. I struggled with all the movements. My main goal was always just to complete my workouts.
I’ve been doing CrossFit now for 5 years. I loved the fact that I was able to work out through my last pregnancy with my daughter. It really gave me a ton of energy and I attribute my easy, short, and natural child birth to the time I spent at the gym while pregnant. After I was cleared to come back, I sat down with Bill to discuss the nutrition component. In the last 14 months, I’ve lost all my baby weight, plus 20lbs. CrossFit has been one of the single greatest life choices I’ve ever made. Not only do I feel great, but working out helps me deal with anxiety and stress. I’ve found that since I started CrossFit, my anxiety levels have decreased dramatically. I’d say I have so many happy memories, but the greatest part of CrossFit for me has been taking things that seemed impossible and making them possible. I was afraid of weights and now I can’t imagine my life without them.”
