Want to go faster? Slow down.

Want to go faster? Slow down.

I’ve been doing jiu-jitsu for a little over 2 years now. It takes a long time to figure it out, and if you do jiu-jitsu, you know that is the biggest understatement possible!

I’ve been committed to about 3 days a week for most of the 2 years, with this summer being the most inconsistent I’ve been due to a host of factors.

Now that I’m settling back into a regular training schedule again, I have slowed things way down. I’m making note of the basic mechanics and attending some classes that are geared towards beginners too

What I’m also doing is putting myself in compromised, or not ideal, positions. Doing this kind of sucks, because I’m getting smashed a bunch, but it is crucial and necessary because I want to get better.

You can liken this, in terms of exercise, with doing the things (movements, modalities) that you don’t particularly like, but you know there is value in. Like many runners don’t enjoy lifting heavy weights and many physically strong people may not enjoy heavy cardio. But you KNOW you need both!

So guess what is happening, even after just a few weeks of taking this slightly different approach to my jiu-jitsu training. I’m getting better. I’ve figured out how to get out of a few positions that I’ve been stuck in for 2 years. And, I expect this to continue.

If you’ve been stagnated in your progress, maybe it’s time to evaluate your approach too.

Sometimes when you want to go faster, you have to slow down. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
