1. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CROSSFIT RENAISSANCE?

Over the years, I had watched the CrossFit Games many times. I’d think to myself, how could these women put two times their bodyweight over their head? How could they run for so long and then do 50 pull-ups when I couldn’t even do a single one? Seeing how strong and confident the female competitors were always amazed me, but I never once thought about trying it myself. I hadn’t been a competitive athlete in a long time and I had gained a ton of weight after taking off of college and entering the work world for a few years. Then I saw the CrossFit Renaissance sign on Edgemont Street and looked up the average cost of CrossFit per month. I convinced myself that I couldn’t afford it (a total excuse, as I easily could). I drove past that sign and thought about trying it out almost every day for two years. When I saw a Groupon for 10 classes, I immediately bought it. I knew I didn’t have the confidence to try CrossFit alone, so I begged my sister to buy a Groupon too. Thankfully she did or I would probably still be in the same gym rut of just running on the treadmill a few times a week.

2. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION?

My first impression was pure intimidation! I watched some of our members doing a WOD as I waited for my foundation class and became even more intimidated as they performed movements I had convinced myself I would never be able to do. I actually thought I was going to throw up from nervousness on my way to CFR almost every day for the first month or two.

3. HAS THAT CHANGED?

Absolutely! My pure intimidation has turned in to pure excitement for every class. Now when I see someone like Jackie doing a heavy push press or Michelle cranking out pull-up’s like it’s her job I don’t get discouraged like I did that very first week. Now I get super pumped because not only is it awesome seeing my fellow athletes doing great things, it’s even more awesome knowing that eventually, with enough work, I too will be able to accomplish that.

4. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Right now I’m trying to get more technical on my Oly lifts in the competitor’s class with Kevin. I’m also trying to work on pull ups; I will do pull-ups without a band this year!

5. WHAT IS THE TOUGHEST PART OF CROSSFIT FOR YOU?

The toughest part about Crossfit for me is not talking about Crossfit. I want to tell everyone what a positive impact it has made on my life. On a serious note though the hardest part for me is probably completing some of the longer more cardio based workouts; I definitely need to work on pacing myself better and breathing correctly so I don’t run out of gas too quickly.

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY AT CROSSFIT RENAISSANCE?

The first time I did Annie which was pretty soon after I started at CFR. Double unders and sit-ups were two movements I knew I could do even if I could only string together 3 or 4 DU’s; it was a huge confidence booster to be able to complete a WOD Rx’d, I think I became addicted after that one.

7. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?

I started at the end of July 2014. So, about six months.

8. WHAT KIND OF RESULTS HAVE YOU SEEN? BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL.

I’m shocked at the results I’ve seen so far. The physical results have been amazing; I’ve lost 43 pounds so far and I’m stronger than I have ever been in my entire life. I’ve gone from my first week at CFR where I was doing slow step-ups on the box to doing 10 over the box jump burpees in 45 seconds last week. Even daily life tasks like taking out the trash have become so much easier. The mental results are what I am truly grateful for though. Crossfit has totally changed my mindset on fitness, health and lifestyle in general. My focus is on fueling my body as well as possible so I can push myself to the limits of what I am physically capable of. While the weight loss has certainly been nice, for the very first time in my life the last thing I am concerned with is the way my body looks; that alone is an amazing feeling that I never thought I would have. I am so thankful for my CFR family.
