Sectionals Recap…

Man, what an awesome day yesterday at the PA/MD/DE CrossFit games sectionals. The event was hosted by CF KOP and put on by CF Apex. The WODs were brutal. Especially WOD #3.

Matt Smith gave everything he had yesterday, and placed 25th out of 128 male competitors, edging out some very good athletes in the process. It was an honor to compete with him yesterday.

Another notable finish yesterday was a friend of CFR, CFWC’s Jenny Butler. You might remember Jenny won the CF total meet here. Jenny is just amazing to watch, and has a real shot at Aromas in my opinion.

I managed a 10th place showing. Here is the breakdown from my online training journal on how I felt about the WODs:

A decent day today at sectionals. It was great to see so many familiar faces.

I managed a 10th place showing. Top 20 go to regionals. Definitely felt about 85% going into this. All I wanted to do is qualify for the regionals and get back to some solid training. Goal accomplished and time to get serious.

Here’s how it went:

WOD 1:

As many reps as possible in 3 minutes of:
Floor-to-Overhead (155/85lbs)

I finished 29 reps.

Definitely felt gassed on this one. Should have been able to bang out a few more.

WOD 2:

In 10 minutes as many reps as possible of:

500m Run
1-Arm Overhead Kettlebell Squats (35/26lbs)

Note: “Nicole” style scoring, put the kettlebell down at any point and run 200m.

I finished 165 reps.

I paced myself too much on this. I wanted to make sure I didn’t run after the requisite run, and I accomplished this, but was a little too conservative and rested too much. Had more to give.

WOD 3:

As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:
(35/15lb vest worn throughout)

Row 1000m – This is only done once to start the heat.

Then:

20 Double-unders
15 Wall Balls (20/14lbs)
10 Ring Push-ups
5 Pull-ups

I finished 4 rounds +20 DUs, +6 wallballs for a total of 226.

This is the only performance I felt like I gave my all on. It was a very tough one. I was doing almost all singles on the wallballs. They might as well have been 500lb Deadlifts. Just brutal.

  1. Hey Bill, I’m the north guy who was in your group yesterday. That last heat did me in! I’m def going to be stopping by your box very soon. You’re a great competitor and I’m sure when I get my box open soon we’ll be keeping in touch. Best of luck in May. WE ARE NC!

  2. Awesome job Bill! Congrats. I looked all over for you after the top 20 was announced. I am soooooo excited that we get to go to Ohio and represent our area together. Let’s get together and do some WODs sometime!

  3. Hey Bill,
Congratulations again! You killed it! It was great competing with you as well. I definitely wish I got to watch you crush your workouts instead of being in the same heat.

And Thanks for the kind words. For myself, I think the bottom line is I need to get a little stronger overhead. If I had not failed on 2 jerks my last 2 reps, I would have been top 20. Oh well. There is always next year.

Keep Training Hard! I know you are going to do great at sectionals.

    -Matt

  4. I am looking forward to Ohio. 7 weeks or so to bring up some weaknesses. Game on.

Funny, I was looking for you at the exact same time.

I’ll get at you about getting some training in together.

  5. Hey Bill
